Lucca is extended on the sides of the Serchio river in a level area and encloses its treasures inside of a town-walls building of approximately 4 km that can be travelled over on foot or in bicycle.
Every tourist who visits Lucca remains fascinated by the majesty of the sixteenth century town-walls that protect conserved its historical architectonic center.As we are taking a walk, we can observe the main beauties of the city interrupted by 11 bastions from the entire town-walls.
The main street that crosses Lucca is the Via Fillungo and it is also the shopping center of the city with the most elegant stores, moreover covering it you can also get to the Saint Frediano’s Church (where is conserved the mummified body of Saint Zita) and to the public square of the antique roman amphitheater evocative and unique because of its oval form and the shape of the buildings that surround it as many open frames.
Other places to visit are the Pfanner Palace with its beautiful garden of the sixteenth century, the ducal Palace (Palazzo ducale), the Botanical garden (Orto Botanico), the Guinigi tower (Torre Guinigi) truly beautiful and particular because of the enormous oak we can see on the top of the tower, and San Martin’s Cathedral (Duomo san Martino) where we can admire the marble tomb of Ilaria del Caretto sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia, and the famous Volto Santo (Holy face) which the legend says about it’s been sculpted by angels.Lucca is located in a truly strategic point because it’s located from very few kilometers to the beautiful mountains of the Garfagnana, and also from the famous Versilia.
Events: Lucca is the theater for many national and international manifestations such as:
1. Lucca Summer Festival (in July); Festival of Pop Rock Music with International stars.
2. The Puccini Festival (July/August), in the small town of Torre del Lago where Puccini was born, is renewed every year the appointment with his greatest operas: ”Madame Butterfly” “Tosca” “La Bohème” and “La Rondine”.
3. The Settembre Lucchese (Lucca’s September) is the greatest cultural and folkloric manifestation that take place in Lucca and its outskirts with a full month of fairs, markets in the center of the city and events of all types. The most awaited moment is the evening of September 13th, when the Luminara is carried out of Santa Croce (Saint Cross) and all the frontages of the buildings are covered with lights and candles in a marvelous scenario. At the end of the procession take place the local representatives of the authority, associations of volunteers, the parishes and at last parade all together in age customs.
4. Lucca Comics & Games is the most important cartoons and role games’ exhibition of Italy and attracts every year more visitors (this year more than 30.000!).
5. Exhibition Antiche Camelie della Lucchesia (Ancient Camellias of the Lucchesia, March/April). Exposure of camellias in their innumerable varieties. National exhibition of botanical paintings and drawings. Tasting of typical products, concerts, exhibitions, artistic laboratories, shows and music.
6. Exhibition of Flowers and Sweets of Saint Zita (April), Fair of uncut flowers and ornament plants.
7. Moreover every the third Sunday of the month comes carried out the MARKET Of the ANTIQUES DEALERS, the stalls are placed in the historical center.
